The First-time Manager
- Trashed by SampahMan @ 3:39 AM
The First-time Manager by Loren B. Belker and Gary S. Topchik is an EXTREMELY useful book for those who are managers for the first time in their lives. The book presents many topics that delves into the various responsibilities of a manager (and there are many), and does so in a way where it is easily understandable. This is due to the writing style which seems like you're having a conversation with the authors.I recommend The First-time Manager to you if:
1. You are interested in moving into management into the future
2. You are already involved in a semi-managerial position where you are required to display some leadership qualities
3. You are already a manager, and you find that your style is just not working (or parts of it)
Recommended chapters in The First-time Manager (because I personally stand to gain most from them):
Chapter 3: Building Trust and Confidence
Chapter 4: Show Your Appreciation
Chapter 5: Being An Active Listener
Chapter 7: Dealing With Your Superiors
Chapter 9: Building Team Spirit
Chapter 10: Managing Problem Employees
Chapter 13: Managing Change: Dealing with Resistance
Chapter 17: No Secrets (Inside comment: YES! NO SECRETS! IF WE ARE USING D*BB**R, PLEASE INFORM EVERYONE FIRST-HAND ABOUT THE "EXECUTIVE" DECISION)
Chapter 19: The Current State of Loyalty
Chapter 20: Is There Such A Thing as Motivation? (Recommended read for you-know-who)
Chapter 23: Doing Performance Appraisals
Chapter 26: Developing a Positive Self-Image (By far the hardest chapter to read, because I had to face up to a lot of personal deficiencies)
I can go on and on, but I'll just let you read the book yourself. It shouldn't take more than 6 hours to finish the book (also one of the reasons why I arrived to work late at 9.30a.m., discipline, discipline...), but I guarantee you that there is much to gain from reading it.
Just let me know if you have problems getting a hand on a copy of The First-time Manager. I'll lend you mine :)
