Guess who?
- Trashed by SampahMan @ 10:33 PM
Snaked 1/2 a day off work last Friday to go shopping for my girlfriend's birthday gift. So I jetted off to MidValley and visited the Guess boutique. I was planning to get her a watch, and I found the perfect one. Hope she likes it :)So while waiting for my credit card to go through approval, I was kinda looking around, trying to feel not so broke. You know when you buy tickets to the cinema, you look at the computer screen to see where your seat is? I was peeking at what the cashier was putting on the computer, and I actually saw him collecting sales demographics. There was a dropdown, and I only managed to see 2 out of maybe 5 selections. First was "Local, Malay" and the other was "Local, Chinese". Obviously, he put me under the second option, but I was a little peeved because I don't really like people collecting information about me without my permission.
Anyway, that got me wondering, since this information is probably meant for the marketing people at Guess, how would they be using this information?
Say if, "Local, Malays" constitute 80% of their sales, in an effort to boost sales for "Local, Indian", Guess is going to place more ads in Tamil newspapers?
Anyway, is S******a considered "Local, Malay" or "Foreign, Arab"?
Or is this whole story a smoke screen to disguise the fact that I went for an interview? :P

I got the same while ordering stuff in burger king klcc before. the counter girl tag me under 'Melayu' so I cheerfully told her 'cik, salah la, saya bukan Melayu'. The flabbergasted reaction was worth it. there, teach you guys to peg ppl by face.
and happy belated bday, trashycan's other half!
"Salesperson wanted, Chinese Female only" (Openly but probably unintentionally racist, probably pretty sexist) can easily be replaced by "Salesgirl wanted, Chinese Speaker Preferred". (Not too bad anymore is it?)
